Robert Ford: Animate Works
Animate Works based in the UK deliver workshops in a variety of different Art
media, Science themes, Drama and Design Technology. They have been conducted with the support of Lutons’ ELearning@Luton Centre who have supplied the hardware, ibooks and dv cameras.
The examples on the right were produced at different workshops:
- Year 5 & 6 mixed ability group
This workshop at Sundon Park Junior School with mixed ability students from years 5 and 6 began with examples of animation techniques including flick books, zoetropes and stop motion films such as ’ Creature Comforts’.
The individual students then created a character of their own using plasticene. They worked in groups of 3 or 4 to create a story that involved each character.
The completed movies are a tremendous achievement considering most of the students had never used the equipment before.
- Salt animation workshop
This three hour workshop took place at Tims Art Supplies in Hitchin, UK. The participants (by mixed ages from 9 to 15) used salt on a black sugar paper base to create the animation.
"Stop Motion Animation is an exciting medium that all
students find easy to express their ideas through. It
gives the opportunity for team work and therefore
suitable for industry based 'team building workshops'.
" - Robert Ford
- Team building workshop
The Team Building Workshop was with Junior School Staff from the same school.
They had one day to create their finished animation. They were divided into groups before creating their characters, but from then on followed the same procedure as the students. The tasks of modelling, camera usage, directing, animating and editing were shared amonst the group.
- Mixed age workshop
The workshop held at Tims Art Supplies took place over two three hour sessions. The group contained mixed ages from 9 to 70. None of the group had used animation equipment before, and as such the resulting videos were outstanding. The participants enjoyed working together, sharing tasks and learning new skills.
Watch the movies
Boinx iStopMotion gives animators the opportunity to learn and use creative skills, to be able to work as part of a team, to show their abilities to direct, to organise, to visualise ideas and plan and work with a structured scheme.
Boinx iStopMotion works almost seemlessly with imovie making the animation process available to the least experienced of users.
Stop motion animation has applications across the curriculum from storytelling, science experiments and observations, ict using systems, to a creative art form.
