Supported cameras

iStopMotion can be used with almost every cam that can be used with QuickTime. We can only test some cameras so if you want to be sure that your camera works with iStopMotion get a demo license and try before you buy.

QuickTime Devices

Any camera that works with QuickTime capturing works with iStopMotion. We use a Sony DVCam, an iBot, iSight, and some low cost no brand USB webcam and they work fine.

DV cams

Highres Video Cameras

With the HR license key iStopMotion can capture movies of almost any size. We tested two High Res Cams:

• Basler A102fc with 1392x1040 pixels
• Allied Vision Tech (Marlin F145C-2)

HDV Cameras

Recently we had the opportunity to take a closer look at the Sony HDR-FX1 HDV camcorder. It certainly has that "must have" factor and of course we would like to support it with iStopMotion. Unfortunately, it turns out that the camera does not provide an HD live feed, it can only provide HD when reading in from the tape. Neither iMovie HD nor Final Cut HD display a live feed like they do with DV cameras. The reason for this is probably that it is very hard to decode a 1080i HDV signal, which comes in MPEG-2, in real time. So, for now, we can not support the Sony HDR-X1, but we will keep an eye on the HD camcorder market for certain.

Digital Still Cameras

Your camera must support the Picture Transfer Protocol so that iStopMotion can import pictures from the camera. You can find a list of cameras at the Apple Website. If your camera supports remote capture you can use it with IStopMotion to capture direct from the iStopMotion Menu. Please read the information about the Still Camera Plugin for more information.
