FAQ

Q Does iStopMotion support my camera?
A Any camera that works with QuickTime capturing works with iStopMotion. We use a Sony DVCam, an iBot, iSight, and some low cost no brand USB webcam and they work fine. We also tested some High Res Cams from Basler (Basler A102fc with 1392x1040 pixels) and Allied Vision Tech (Marlin F145C-2).
QWill my Still Camera work with iStopMotion?
A If your camera supports the Picture Transfer Protocol, iStopMotion can now import pictures from the camera. Some cameras also support remote capture, where the computer tells the camera to shoot a picture and that picture is immediately transfered to the computer. In this case, iStopMotion treats the imported picture just like it would treat a live stream from a video cam. Get a demo license and use the Still Camera Assitent to find out if your camera works with iStopMotion. You can find a list of tested cameras here.
QIf I purchase the Still Camera Plugin, will I be able to record high res movies?
AFor movies with a resolution of more than DV (PAL/NTSC) you need an iStopMotion 1.8 HR license which includes the Still Camera Plugin. The Plugin in connection with iStopMotion 1.8 DV will let you capture pictures with the still camera and produce movies up to DV (PAL/NTSC) resolution.
Q My cam goes into sleep mode. How can I prevent this?
AiStopMotion can not keep the camera from timing-out and turning off. Please try to use your camera without tape and/or plug the can in the power outlet.
QI did not receive a license key.
A

Purchased at Kagi

If you purchased a license key at Kagi you should have received an email from Kagi with the subject "Thanks for your purchase". You will find your license key at the end of the email. If you did not receive the email from Kagi please use the Kagi Order Tracking System

Requested a demo key

If you do not receive your demo license key within an hour or two, please request a new key. The three most common reasons for our mailservers to fail to deliver keys are:

  • Make sure that the email adress you entered is correct. If you have entered a @verizon.com/net address please go back and use a different address as Verizon.net apparently blocks all domains not hosted in the US and we can't get past that 'line of defense'.
  • Make sure your email account has not exceeded its quotas.
  • Check if your Spam filter has accidentally filtered the email containing your key.

Q My license key does not work.
AUsually the best way to enter your license information is to copy the whole Email with your license key and then paste it into iStopMotion as outlined in the mail. If this does not work for you please follow these Instructions.
Q What platform does iStopMotion run on?
AiStopMotion runs on Mac OS X 10.3 or newer only. It will not run on OS 9. We also do not have or plan a PC version.
Q How do I cut a movie and add sound?
A iStopMotion is designed to take scenes using the stop motion animation technique. If you want to cut several scenes into a movie, give it a nice sound track or add titles and special effects, we recommend that you export the iStopMotion scenes to a DV stream and import them into iMovie or Final Cut Pro.
Q How can I retrieve my work after a crash?
A We've got a small tool that lets you recover your work after a crash. However, it is not suited for the general public. If you need to recover your files, please contact us.
Q How can I put my work in your Example list?
A Send us a link to your movie and some further information like: who made the movie, the movie's name and any other information you like about the movie and how it was created. If you can not put your movie on a website you can also send a CD or DVD.
Q How do I report a problem to Boinx Software?
A Please use the Feedback Form to report Problems and Feature Requests. Please provide us with these informations when reporting a problem:

  • Product and Product Version
  • License (DV, HR, Demo)
  • OS X version and Quick Time version
  • Hardware information
  • Camera Type
  • Programs running in the background
Q I've read there is a free Lite License - where can I find it?
A The free Lite License has been discontinued. Current Users of the 1.0 Lite License have received an email explaining their options. The existing Lite License Key will continue to work with all versions up to 1.1.1.
Q In the list over supported still cameras you have the following entries Nikon D50 and Nikon DSC D50 - what is the difference?
A Some camera makers like Nikon equip their cameras with two different USB modes, which is rather confusing and probably unnecessary. When set to "Mass Storage" mode, which unfortunately is the default, the camera reports being a "Nikon DSC D50". In order to be able to capture images with the camera, set it to "PTP" mode. That can be done from the "System" menu, "USB" on Nikon cameras. Once set to "PTP" the camera reports itself as "Nikon D50" via USB. Same for D70, some Coolpix models and probably more.
