1.8.0 - March 16th, 2005 iStopMotion DV, HR and Still Camera Plugin
New Sound Support for the HR version
Given a HR license you can now import a soundtrack into iStopMotion. A graphical waveform will help you match your animation to the sound. Sound can be played alone by clicking and holding the mouse button somewhere on the waveform, and of course along with the movie in playback. A context menu gives access to some common soundtrack operations like muting, moving and replacing the sound.
NewMajor Timeline Improvements
  • The timeline can now display small thumbnails of the frames if timeline magnification is turned on.
  • Drag & Drop is supported in the timeline. You can move or copy any selection by dragging / Option-dragging it in the timeline.
  • Dragging image files from the Finder into the timeline imports those images, dragging the other direction exports images.
NewMajor improvements to image scaling.
If input and movie results differ in size, iStopMotion will now use a MUCH better scaling algorithm. This is most obvious with HR movies and when using still cameras. On the downside, scaling is now a bit slower, again most noticeable with huge images.
New Multiple Still Camera Import
More than one shot can be imported from a still camera into iStopMotion in one go. Also watch for some new appearance configuration inside the import window.
New Playback Improvements
There are new menu options to only playback the current selection and to loop the playback.
New Completely Redesigned and Improved Preferences
Enh Blinking Improvements
  • Blinking can now be set even slower to help distinguish the frames easier.
  • In order to better spot the difference between preview and movie image during blinking, there is now an option to mark the preview image with a red dot. See the View menu.
Enh Still Camera files that cannot be imported by iStopMotion (RAW, movies) are no longer displayed in the import window.
Fix Major improvements to memory management, resulting in better performance and a lot less problems.
Fix Exporting a movie would not replace previously exported ones by the same name resulting in garbage data.
Fix Fixed several less and more serious bugs related to document closing and still camera support.
New All necessary files are now distributed inside the application package, there is no longer the need for an installer.
Fix Fix known bugs of version 1.5
1.5.1-1.7 - internal versions, never released to public
1.5.0 - Sep 23th, 2004 iStopMotion DV, HR and Still Camera Plugin
New With the adequate license key iStopMotion can now capture high resolution movies. Movies of almost any size can be created, depending on your input device. You might need a fast machine with a good graphics card to enjoy working with high resolutions.
New Various degrees of noise reduction, also known as Frame Averaging, can be applied with the HR version of iStopMotion. See the Movie menu.
New The movie can now be zoomed and moved inside the window. See the new Zoom sub menu in the View menu.
New iStopMotion creates a preview movie on-the-fly for playback and plays that instead of the original movie. The disadvantage of this technique is that you have to wait for the preview to compute. The big advantage however is that movies of any size should now play back in realtime. Note that the playback is compressed and will therefor look not as good as the original. Your original data is not touched and will remain high quality.
New Multiple image sources can be used with iStopMotion. There's a new source sub menu in the Movie menu and a popup menu in the main window.
New There is now a Still Camera Plugin for iStopMotion. Given the adequate license you can import still images from your camera or - if your camera supports it - capture images directly from within iStopMotion. Importing is done via the Edit menu. Capturing is done by selecting the camera as source. Please note that still camera support requires Mac OS X v10.3. A "still camera assistant" that helps you in deciding whether your camera works with the new iStopMotion Still Camera Plugin is available from the Help menu.
New Licensing has been merged into its own window and should be even easier to use.
New Rotating the video input and muting the time-lapse sound is no longer hidden. Rotating is actually quite visible ;-) The time-lapse sound can be switched off via the preferences.
New All aspects of time lapse recording can now be controlled via AppleScript.
New There's a new option in the preferences to release the video hardware (camera) when iStopMotion is stopped and in background. This makes it possible to work with two applications that use a single camera at the same time. Please note that switching to iStopMotion takes longer in that case, so only use this setting if you really need it.
Fix It should now always be possible to open old movies and continue working on them.
Fix The application should no longer crash or behave strange when a portable goes to sleep due to low battery conditions.
Fix The temp folder set in the preferences will now also be used for the temporary movie data. Some users were reporting problems of full boot partitions before.
Fix Lots of minor and not so minor bug fixes, improved stability and memory management.
Note Version 1.5.0 is an English only release. Localizations will follow ASAP.
1.3.1 - July 22nd, 2004
New iStopMotion includes a Swedish localization, kindly provided by Jerker Nilsson. Please note that we can only provide support in English and German language.

New iStopMotion is now fully localizable and a German localization is included.
New There are two new hidden options, one to disable the Time Lapse sound and one to rotate the video input by 180¡.
New Copy and Paste between movies with different resolutions now works.
Fix The license tab of the preferences has been greatly improved to make it even less error prone.
Fix The compression settings are now excluded from the "Video Settings" panel, as they made no sense in iStopMotion. Video data coming from the camera is decompressed and always saved uncompressed inside the iStopMotion movie.
Fix Selection is always correctly displayed in the status line.
Fix Exporting images and movies always exports exactly the selected frames.
Fix Delete from the Edit menu now uses the standard Finder shortcut Command-Backspace.
Fix There's a new shortcut for Play. Present has been re-mapped to Command-Shift-F be in line with QuickTime Player.
Fix Lots of cosmetic and usability improvements.
1.2.1 - Dec. 16th, 2003
Fix When working with DV cameras, a wrong Codec was used in iStopMotion 1.2 to capture images. This resulted in less than optimal quality when using full DV resolution.
1.2 - Dec. 12th, 2003
Mod iStopMotion 1.2 requires a DV license key (for version 1.0 and up). The Lite License has been discontinued.
New Really huge speed improvements when capturing images. We're talking about factor 3-6 here. Even on moderately equipped machines (iMac G3) you should now be able to capture Time Lapse with intervals of one second.
New Divided capture click sound into two parts for better feedback. Now you can hear when capturing starts and when it is finished.
New Different and shorter capture sound for Time Lapse. Again different sound that alerts you when a Time Lapse shot fails (e.g. when camera goes into sleep).
New Divided capture click sound into two parts for better feedback. Now you can hear when capturing starts and when it is finished.
New Switching between multiple input devices is supported. You can use iStopMotion with, e.g., a DV camera and an iSight without problems.

Fix Some other small fixes.
1.1 - Oct. 29th, 2003
New The blinking slider has found its way into the menu, including keyboard shortcuts - by popular demand. Look under "View > Blinking" for a list of choices.
New There are new options to show areas like a specific aspect ratio, the action and title save areas as overlay in the movie window. See the new button "Frame OverlayÉ" in the options drawer for details. These options should really help people targeting material for image formats like 16:9 and TV screens.
New Huge speed improvements when using IIDC devices like, e.g., Apple iSight. Smaller improvements for all cameras.
New The Options Drawer always opens on the right side of the window.
New Integrated Online Version Check window.
Fix Tried to sort out all Panther related problems. Please report if we missed one.
Fix Compiled using the latest tools. Should bring slight speed improvements in all areas and provide basic G5 support.
Fix Usual bug fixes.

New The timeline now features a cool aqua look.
New Internet version checking now has an option to check for beta versions in addition to release versions.
Fix Lots of bug fixes.

New Editing of movie frames in an external editor. File format and the editor application can be selected in the Preferences. Editing itself is very simple: Select frame(s) to edit in iStopMotion. Chose "Edit In ..." menu entry. After working on the files in the editor, just save the file(s) by hitting Command+S. The frames in iStopMotion will update automatically.
New Blinking. Camera Preview and last captured image are displayed in rapid alteration in the preview window. This stroboscopic effect helps your brain to imagine the sequence a lot better.

New Export of frames as Images or Quicktime movie, accessible from Edit and Context menus.

Change Keyboard navigation in the timeline was modified. It now behaves as you would expect in a text editor. Cursor keys move single frames. Use Shift+Cursor to select frames, the cursor keys in any combination with Alt/Option to move one second instead of one frame.
0.7 - Apr. 28th, 2003
New Time Lapse. Frame capturing can be automated with an adjustable time interval.
New Frame selection. You can now select frames in the timeline. Selected frames are displayed in blue color and can be used for clipboard operations. Just as you would expect, shift-clicking selects a range of frames.
New Multi-Frame Cut/Copy/Paste/Replace. The clipboard operations now work on multiple frames as well. Note: The handling of the clipboard is different for single and multiple frames. Single frames can be pasted into image editors (Adobe Photoshop et al.), multiple frames can be pasted into movie editors (QuickTime Player, ...). Both single and multiple frames can be copied between iStopMotion movies, given that resolution and frame rate are the same.
Fix Better detection of Firewire disconnect/re-connect. The application should no longer hang if a DV cam "falls asleep".

New More Keyboard Shortcuts. The capture shortcuts can be adjusted in the Preferences.
New Speech Recognition. Set up a movie, enable it and say "capture one" to your computer. Cool, eh?

New You can step through the frames of your movie using the left/right arrow keys. Pressing shift moves a full second instead of one frame. BTW, the same applies to the next/previous transport buttons.
New Licensing Scheme. Starting with version 0.6 you need a valid license in order to fully use iStopMotion. That's not a big deal, as getting one is currently free. Just follow the instructions inside iStopMotion.
